2-Year and 9-Month Check Ups

Yesterday was a busy morning: three boys, three well-baby check ups. Always a good time!

The boys were fairly cooperative. The main obstacle in today's visit was that they "graduated" from a baby exam room to a big kid exam room. There is not much difference except that the big kid room does not have wind chimes hanging over the table. Both Aaron and Brady seemed confused by this and were looking around the room for them. Besides that minor bump, here's how things went down:

Aaron:
Height - 34", 50th percentile
Weight - 24.5 lbs, 10th percentile

Brady:
Height - 33 3/4", 50th percentile
Weight - 24.5 lbs, 10th percentile

Brett:
Height - 28 1/4", 50th percentile
Weight - 20 lbs 12 oz, 50th percentile

Wow. That's a lot of 50th percentiles! So, contrary to what I had been thinking, Brett is not huge for his age. He is just right. Aaron and Brady are just super slim, making it seem like Brett is chunkier than he is. The P.A. was quick to point out that this is just fine for them. It's better to start off slim, because over time, there is plenty of time to fatten up. (Sadly, that's true for me....) So physically everyone is perfect. Vision, hearing and motor skills: fine, fine, and fine.

Brett was given the okay to transition to cow's milk which is great, because we started that a week ago! (And he loves it!) Our Pedi believes that if a baby has successfully breastfed and the mother was consuming cow's milk during the nursing with no adverse affects, then go for it at 9 months. This was a financial Godsend when Aaron and Brady were at this age (they only took formula from 6-9 months) and now, frankly, it's just WAY more convenient to not worry about mixing bottles. Although, I can't complain too much as we only did it for months 5-9 with Brett.

Going into this appointment, my main concern was Aaron and Brady's speech. Or, lack thereof. I've written about my concerns in detail at HDYDI. They have single words which we can understand. But, if we are not around, I'm not sure anyone else could understand 90% of those words. They are trying to string together multiple words "all done" and "thank you" are frequently heard, but, again, they are things we KNOW they are trying to say. Their hearing checks out, they understand simple and complex commands, and they are babbling with proper sentence structure. So, that's all good news. The bad news is that, they are, in fact, behind. And they are really frustrated by it. In turn, we are really frustrated.

As I had hoped, the referral to Birth to Three was finally given. I will be making that call later today and detailing their progress here as we go through the process. And if that is the only concern we have with our sons, then we are doing great. Well Babies indeed!

My ped said 12 months for formula...but I can give her cheese and yogurt? lol I am switching over to regular milk in the next few weeks. What a savings that will be!!

And Ryan is doing well with the early intervention...although he is still very far behind. It is frustrating all the way around...I think he and Alison will be talking at the same time...I'm going to go from one to three talkers! I'm not sure I'm ready for that :)

p.s. Alison is crawling...it is too cute :)
