What a wonderful day - the boys were baptised AND the Red Sox won the World Series. (Too bad for the boys that their Daddy is grooming them to be Yankees fans, but we'll discuss that at a later date)
All went well at the church with the boys behaving themselves both during the mass and the Baptismal ceremony. There was an obviuos whisper-ripple that went through the crowd when we stood up to proceed to the altar. "Oh, they're twins!" could be heard from various points throughout the church. Aaron wanted to help out by grabbing on to the pitcher of water as Monseignor Connelly was attempting to bless him. There was a little wrestling back and forth (that kid has a good grip) but otherwise, things went smoothly.
Since we were seated in the front row, we had premier seats for watching the other 11 children present receive their sacrament. Let me just say that I'm no stickler for formality but when you are in church - especially for some sort of formal rite - there are certain standards of dress that should be maintained. As the families came up one by one, I was horrified at some of the outfits I saw! There were those who were overdressed including the mother in the black mini-cocktail dress (girl, I appreciate you've gotten your figure back, but 11:00 am on a Sunday in CHURCH, is not the place to show that off) and the Godfather with the suit accessorized with not one, not two, but three thick gold chains (that bling was blinding). And there were the underdressed including a spectator with high-top sneakers, unlaced, with jeans and an untucked football jersey. What?
Sitting quietly in church, it was all I could do to not make comments left and right. Needless to say I had a good bashing session with my BFF (and Aaron's godmother) Lisa the minute we got back to the house.
So since I couldn't make snarky comments in church, I sat nicely and did what I was supposed to do. I quietly reflected and prayed. I took a good look at my boys and thanked God that even though the pregnancy was stressful and they were born a little early, I was given two (more) strong and healthy babies. I also thanked God for giving them each other, as it is already obvious how close their bond is. It is something that the majority of us will never be able to comprehend and while they don't appreciate it now, I hope they do when they get older.
Here are a few pictures from the occasion. Thanks to faithful blog-reader (and friend!) Kim for making such a beautiful cake
